The IMD logo in Sanskrit means, 'The Sun Gives Rainfall.' With a humble beginning in 1875, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 145th Foundation Day on January 1. It has marched forward with various milestones and paradigms to serve society. It is the principal agency responsible for meteorological observations, weather forecasting, and seismology. It is the first organization in India to deploy a message-switching computer for supporting its global data exchange. Students of Grade 7 are learning about this department in the Chapter- Weather, climate, and adaptations of animals to climate. They presented a detailed report wherein they explained the history of the department, various tasks, and new initiatives taken by the department. The purpose of the enrichment activity was to generate awareness about how the IMD works and warn against severe weather phenomena like tropical cyclones, dust storms, heavy rains, etc. which cause destruction of life and property.
